Middle-School Homework
Homework is an important part of our educational program. It reviews and provides practice for mastery of concepts taught in class. In addition, it instills responsibility and accountability in children, two characteristics essential for Christian growth and development.
Each teacher has specific routines for assigning, recording, and collecting homework in his or her classroom. All teachers follow these guidelines when assigning homework:
- Homework will be routinely assigned on Monday through Thursday evenings. At the teacher’s discretion, it may also be assigned over the weekend. However, teachers are asked when planning for weekend homework to ensure that the student has adequate family time and opportunity to participate in church related activities.
- Late homework will not be accepted and will be given a score of 0 in the grade book.
- Homework assignments will be clearly communicated with students and families. Students in middle school will be responsible for recording daily homework assignments in a planner provided by the school following the procedures that their teachers have established. Maintaining this planner is an important organizational skill that all middle school teachers are trying to instill in students and it is vital that a student follows the prescribed instructions to receive the maximum benefit of learning from this activity. Therefore, the planner will be graded at the end of each marking period and counted as a project grade in every class.
- No more than 2 long-term projects per month across all subject areas will be assigned at the middle school level. Teachers will coordinate the due dates so that they do not fall within the same week.
- In the event of absence, students are expected to consult with the teacher upon their return for any missed class and homework assignments. They will be given additional time to complete the assignments, as indicated in the absence policy stated in this handbook.
Homework is calculated as a part of the quarterly grade in each class. The syllabus for the class will indicate the percentage that homework is allotted in the students’ report card grade for the quarter. Homework
