Promotion and Retention
Students are promoted to the next grade level at the end of each school year based on satisfying the following requirements:
- A satisfactory level of mastery of the material presented during the school year, as evidenced by classroom performance and grades received on report cards, and
- Absences that do not exceed 10% of the school year (17 days). **Exceptions to the minimum attendance requirement can be granted for extended illnesses where the student is under the care of a physician or family circumstances which prevent attendance, provided the student continues to meet the academic requirements of the grade level while working outside of school.
Students can be considered for retention in their current grade based upon the following criteria:
- The student is considerably below grade level in two or more academic subject areas;
- The student has a marginal or failing average grade in two or more academic subject areas (literature/reading, grammar, math, science, history, or health);
- The student has an excessive amount of absences, either excused or unexcused, that have adversely impacted his or her academic progress; or
- The parent and/or school has reason to believe the student is not academically and/or socially prepared for the subsequent grade level.
When a parent or the school would like to recommend that a student be retained in their current grade level, they should contact the administrator to arrange a formal meeting where the issue will be discussed and a decision reached.
